What Makes the Cane Corso So Popular?

Over the years, the Cane Corso has garnered much popularity across the United States.  How did this mighty breed become so loved among Americans?

Let’s start with the Cane Corso becoming a recognized breed in America.

The American Kennel Club serves as the official registry for purebred dogs throughout America. Despite the fact that there are over 340 breeds in the world, the AKC only recognizes 192.

The Cane Corso made the cut and was recognized as the 165th breed to be added to that official list, joining the esteemed company of the Icelandic Sheepdog, the Leonberger, and other such breeds in June of 2010.

If this is the first time you are hearing about the Cane Corso, you maybe be curious as to why this spectacular breed is so noteworthy. Here are just a few reasons why.

First, the Cane Corso is a breed with a powerful, commanding presence. They are large, muscular and big-boned. Many admirers of the breed, including the AKC, refer to them as  “majestic.” They are often distinguished by the presence they command. Having descended from the Roman canis pugnaces, it’s no wonder that Cane Corsos are smart, clever, natural-born hunters. Said to have originated nearly 1,000 years ago in the Tibetan highlands, it is believed that the Cane Corso was originally bred for the purpose of guarding ancient monasteries. Historical research shows that the Romans were so captivated by the breed that they brought it back to Rome, where it is said that the Cane Corso was even used to fight lions! Known to have also been hunters of wild boar, it’s no wonder they make excellent watchdogs. They are one of only two Italian mastiff-type breeds to follow that descension and earn formal breed recognition in the U.S.

There are countless interesting facts about the Cane Corso, all of them further motivation to adopt this special breed. As long as they possess a firm and consistent adoptive family, they are easily trained and very affectionate with their owners.
